| Economy |
[Top of Page]
Economy - overview:
The Utanian economy is primarily agrarian with moderate amounts of agriculture-based
manufacturing, having little industrial development beyond that needed to service agriculture.
With the surrender of all Guwimithian assets in the Dependencies to the new governments, the
Utanian government is estimated to own 50% of the productive capacity in the country, and has
made no moves to decrease that. With significant export markets agreed, the country is one
of the success stories of the former Dependencies, but it still requires significant targeted
investment for industrialisation. Utania's history also leaves a significant legacy of high
poverty and poor asset distribution, a situation the present government is committed to
reversing. GDP growth was estimated at 7% in 300ap after a decade of moderate growth about 4%.
Expectations are for a slight slow down as government policies of redistribution takes effect.
The real boom came with the granting of limited autonomy in the provinces, and the election of
Conservative Governor Charles Asher in (what is now) Lasanne state, who liberalised business
set-up and capitalised on the province's capital being the key link to the Dependencies.
Wealth is now concentrated in the north east of the country. Transport infrastructure has been
solely established by companies needing access to agricultural produce and is poor at best.
Significant investment is required, and the government has committed to such a course.
