Utania condemns Rovens coup
Saturday, March 31, 301 AP Web posted at 1540 UST. MULGRAVE, Utania (ZN) -- Utania's President Okarvits has condemned the attempted coup in Rovens calling on the Rovens military to reject violent means to affect government, but to "embrace peace", while the capital of Rovens experiences periodic gun battles between police and the rebelling soldiers. The attempted military coup in Rovens has shattered the otherwise peaceful transition to democracy, particularly as the military has neither condemned nor approved the military take-over of the capital's downtown area.
It is the first official contact between Utania and Rovens since the latter's independence, which many in Utan Krysaror (the Utanian capital) feel was at the expense of an independent Gvonj, where an estimated four million Utani live. The frosty relations have been thawed by the possibility of the loss of another democratic nation in the troubled SEOC region. Meanwhile, in the capital of Rovens, further reports of gunfire being traded between police and the mutinous troops are filtering through, with reports of as many as thirty civilians and police being injured or killed. In Charmagne street in the downtown district's affluent suburb, police have parked within fifty metres of the paratrooper blockade with heavy and armoured vehicles and shooting broke out at 10am this morning. Police also made a successful incursion into the Atley Park on the city's east, where paratrooper patrols were minimal. Three Paratroopers were captured, while as many as thirty police moved into the park to find and arrest more soldiers. They were eventually driven back by heavy machine-gun fire from an 80mm cannon. It is understood that thirteen police have serious injuries as a result. Haastadt Police Chief Harald Voorsmier has declared his "utter contempt" for any attempted overthrow of the civilian government, and has pitted the city's eight hundred police against the three hundred soldiers. Unfortunately, it is estimated that fewer than a hundred police are die-hard supporters of the democratic government and the police chief. Most, reporters have found are not prepared to risk their lives for this cause. Meanwhile, as the city burns, the military commander in chief, away on leave, has been nowhere to be found. His deputies have steadfastly refused to speak on his behalf, such is the military code of honour and their level of respect for General Keralski.
