General Keralski condemns coup
Sunday, April 1, 301 AP Web posted at 0010 UST.
General Keralski leads the country's 40,000 military personnel and is very popular amongst the military, having their deepest respect. If the General has supported the coup, and ordered his soldiers to take control, there would have been little doubt that the PIMR government, indeed the entire Peoples Republic constitution would have ended. What puzzles many is why it took General Keralski so long to publicly condemn the attempted coup. Officially, the General said he was "unavailable", on leave fishing in the Port of Olives province, and had not heard that a coup had been attempted until late on Saturday. Many government insiders claim he spent the hours deciding whether to support the coup or not, whether the timing was right, and obviously decided it was not. "Clearly this is not the end of the matter, and the country is still under threat from the military", said one government MP.
